Beach Chair
2023
Beach Sand, Sea Water, White Portland Cement
20kg
Beach Chair pairs common casting methods and mediums with sustainable design. It is
an attempt to create a free form object using simple casting techniques and
locally sourced sustainable materials. The negative of the stool was dug into
the sand at a local beach after dark. Sea water is an infinite source and
compliments the initial strength of concrete. Although composite
reinforcement is a suitable option due to its immunity to rust, it is estimated
to take 50 years to decompose and was not suitable for this project. After
pouring the cement into the sand mold it was left to cure under the sand at a
popular beach in Sydney, Australia. Unlike Previous works the Beach Chair allowed me to create, prototype and experiment with out the guilt of further
contributing to landfill. As the cement industry is a large contributor to the
worlds pollution further iterations of this design would include sustainable
binders and reinforcement.
